Monday's Memorial Day Ceremony Details

On Monday, the Oiler Band will again be performing at the city of Huntington Beach's Memorial Day Ceremony at the Pier Plaza. Percussionists, or those needing large instruments out of the band room will need to meet at 9:30am at the band room to have them transported down. Those who already have their instruments and music can meet us at Pier Plaza downtown at 10:15am.

Students need to wear their black band shirts and blue jeans. If students are bringing jackets, please make sure they are black jackets.

The ceremony usually doesn't last longer than an hour. Please come down to watch the band!

Tuesday's Pops Concert Details

Our final full-program concert is this Tuesday at 6pm in the HBHS outdoor amphitheater. Come hear pieces by Gershwin and Bernstein performed by our wind ensemble, and jazz band's last public performance. It is also where we get to honor our seniors for the final time! Students are encouraged to wear semi-formal summer clothes for this concert. I would suggest things like hawaiian shirts, polos, summer dresses, etc. No need to wear ties and slacks.

This concert is outside, so it may be a bit chilly. Feel free to bring blankets! Although there is concrete seating in the amphitheater, you may want to also bring a lawn chair.

Colorguard Workshops/Auditions

We hosted Colorguard workshops this past week and had a great turn out! Auditions for next year will be held this Thursday from 3:30-5pm in the gym. Please share these details with anyone you know that might be interested in joining the team.

Family Contributions

We have already began to plan for next year's marching band production, upcoming concerts, hiring (and re-hiring) of staff members, and purchasing new instruments and equipment for our students to play on. As we plan for these things, we have to take into account what we have raised through fundraising and family contributions.

While our Band Champs fundraiser was a huge success, we only had about 60% of families pay their contributions for Marching Band, and close to 25% for the Spring Ensembles (wind ensemble, drumline, and jazz band).

Because of this, we unfortunately have to begin considering difficult decisions for next year, including reducing the number of amazing specialists we re-hire to work with the students, re-think the type of marching band show we can afford to have written, and cutting back on instrument repairs and maintenance.

As a reminder, the school district only pays for my salary as a teacher. They do not fund uniforms, sheet music, instruments, supplies, specialists, or the many other things that our incredible boosters have made possible.

Please make your family contribution for the ensembles your student is participating in, so we can continue to offer a high-quality, and student-centered music program.

Also, if you did not make your 1st Semester Marching Band Family contribution, please consider still that Marching Band Family Contribution Payment.

If you have any questions, please reach out to our treasurer, Jeremiah Hewitt, at hewitt78@gmail.com.
