Jan 5th, 2025 Band Notes

Happy New Year band families! I hope everyone had a great holiday break and that everyone is feeling re-charged as we head into the second half of the year. As we begin to kick-off our second semester ensembles, I wanted to say a thank you to everyone for your continued support and volunteering. So many things the past few months wouldn't have been possible without you! Below you'll find some important info about what second semester is going to look like for the band program. Please read through and then take a look at the upcoming week's schedule.

Marching Band transitioning to Wind Ensemble

Now that Marching Band is over, our band program will be transitioning to Wind Ensemble. We will no longer be marching and outside for rehearsals, and will instead be working on repertoire in a traditional concert band setting. For second semester, they will have their 8th period dropped and they will stay in 6th period Instrumental I or II for underclassmen and 6th period Advanced Music Honors for upperclassmen.

Rehearsals will still be on M, W, F. Even though rehearsals will now be shorter, there now have the opportunity to do drumline if they made the group, or one of our jazz bands!

Drumline

We concluded drumline auditions the week before break, and students were notified if they made the group. I will send a more detailed set of info to parents of drumline students in the next week or so. For now, know that rehearsals are the same as last year. Mondays 6-9pm and Fridays 3:30-6pm through the end of April.

Jazz Bands

Jazz Band will be beginning in a couple of weeks! We have two groups:

  • Jazz Big Band - Primarily upperclassmen, and consists of a traditional big band instrumentation. For this group we audition any open spots. This year we have the following spots open: 2 trombone, 3 trumpet, 1 alto sax, 1 bari sax, bass guitar, guitar.

  • Jazz Lab Band - Open to anyone! This group is perfect for those wanting to learn how to improvise, get experience playing jazz, and also great for those that don't play a traditional jazz band instrument like flute or clarinet.

District Honor Band

District Honor Band auditions are this coming Thursday from 4-7pm. Everyone is encouraged to audition! Woodwinds audition at Marina HS, Brass at Fountain Valley HS, and Percussion at HBHS.
